Stipends for Professional Development Opportunities

Tenure/tenure-track faculty may apply to their departments for Professional Development Leave Without Pay Stipends. Stipends are revenue-neutral as determined by department chairs and deans. Consequently, departments can provide stipends only when the revenue generated by "difference-in-pay" suffices for whatever replacement of teaching is needed to preserve the department's necessary course offerings. Stipends are provided to partially offset the financial impact of a reduction in time base for faculty pursuing projects in scholarship, research, creative work, teaching, curricular design, community service, or other areas related to individual or departmental professional interests or needs.

Stipends are awarded in fixed amounts according to rank and are provided to offset no more than a .40 reduction in time base during a semester. Stipends are provided for no more than a total of two semesters in any two successive academic years. All employee benefits are maintained, and credit toward sabbaticals is earned at the usual rate, during a professional development opportunity leave.

As part of the process of applying for a stipend, faculty must apply for a Professional Leave Without Pay through the procedure of the University as set forth in the Faculty Manual, Chapter 3.4, p. 55 and Article 22 of the Agreement. Interested faculty may contact their department chair. Department chairs recommend to college deans, who have been delegated the final level of approval for requests to participate in this program.

Processing Stipends for Professional Development Opportunities

Based upon a clarification of tax legislation with regard to faculty pay, the procedure for processing Stipends for Professional Development Opportunities has now changed. Effective immediately, instead of forwarding the names and account numbers of the recipients, please prepare an honorarium form (a sample is attached). Once approved by the department chair and college dean, please forward your completed honorarium forms to the Office of Faculty Affairs. Once approved, the forms will be forwarded to Human Resources for payroll processing.
