CSU Forgivable Loan / Doctoral Incentive Programs

The purpose of the CSU Forgivable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Program is to increase the pool of individuals who show promise of becoming strong candidates for CSU instructional faculty positions by providing financial assistance to graduate students with the motivation, skills, and experience needed to teach the diverse student body in the CSU. It is a competitive program directed by the California State University but open to doctoral students accross the country.

The program provides financial support up to $10,000 per year, (a total of $30,000 within 5 years). Participants are given the financial support to increase the likelihood that they will successfully compete for CSU faculty positions. Debt on the loans will be reduced by 20 percent for each year of full-time teaching in the CSU afterward, for up to five years. The loans of recipients who do not teach in the CSU will be treated as low interest loans with a 15-year repayment period. Recipients must be full-time students in a doctoral program during this academic year.

There is no means test for eligibility, and students may receive other income from fellowships, assistantships, grants, loans, or employment. The recipients may enroll in any approved doctoral program at an accredited university in the United States or abroad. There is no requirement that a participant have had any prior connection with The California State University.

Detailed information for the CSU Forgivable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Program is available in the Office of Faculty Affairs, Room 451 of the Administration Building.
